RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
