Seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
